Solar energy has been around for quite some time now and even though the Planet is reeling heavily under the impact of the intense abuse of fossil-based energy, the solar energy technology has not been able to gather a real foothold. Why is it so? What is it lacking in the solar energy technology that it is not able to replace the dwindling fossil-based energy and give a fair chance of long-term survival?

The answer to this question might be found while comparing the advantages and the disadvantages presented by the solar energy.

The Advantages Of The Solar Energy Technology

The advantages are many, many, many and it is hoped that sooner rather than later every home on earth would be run with this or any other type of renewable energy.

1. Unlimited supply - the first and foremost advantage is that the solar energy is unlimited unlike the fossil-based energy which is being gobbled up at an alarming rate by the ever growing population.

2. Free of cost – you do not have to pay anything for the solar energy. The only cost that you would bear would be the setting up of the photo voltaic cells – or the solar energy cells that would capture the energy for your use from the sun.

3. Free of any harmful by-products – unlike mining of coal, petroleum and other sources of fossil-based fuel, the solar energy has no harmful by-products that may endanger the Earth as a whole or the life on it.

4. Low or no maintenance – today’s solar energy technology offers solar cells and mini plants that require the lowest possible maintenance. Whatever maintenance is required can be done by anybody who is interested with or without any particular training.

5. No noise, no moving parts – unlike fans, pumps, etc the solar panels do not have any movable parts and thence the capturing and transitions of the solar power for use inside a home, office or industry is completely noiseless.

The Disadvantages Of Solar Energy Technology

Even though there are so many plus points with the solar energy technology, it has not caught on as expected. A look at the disadvantages might throw a light on this aspect.

1. High cost of solar cells installation – the initial costs can be high and not everybody is ready to invest such a lot even though they would recover the cost within a year or two through the free electricity obtained from the solar cells.

2. Unsuitable locations – not all locations are suitable for solar energy harvesting.

What is solar energy? Where it can be used? How long would it be until the solar energy takes over the fossil-based energy for the general consumption of human beings? Most people who hear about solar energy think about these questions all the time and they never get the right answers because there are no right answers yet. However, in order to understand the importance of solar energy today, you need to know a little more than only its source and spelling.

Interesting Facts About Solar Energy – Some You Knew And Some Are New

1. Solar energy it infinite and totally renewable – this means that you can have it forever or until the Planet earth exists

2. Solar power can be used indoors and outdoors with equal ease and least maintenance. Once harvested, it can be applied to power any and all appliances that a human being has access to – including a car.

3. Solar power has already been tested successfully on running light vehicles. In the year 1990 a solar powered aircraft was flown across the USA. This is one of the lesser known interesting facts about solar energy.

4. The reason why the solar power has not yet become the craze it should have been by now, is because the initial cost of installation of the solar plant is very high. This is something everybody knows by now and hence the lack on enthusiasm. However, among the many interesting facts about solar energy is that over the past decades a lot of research has gone in on this aspect and today the costs are considerably down. Once the initial investment is done, you would be able to enjoy electricity round the clock, no matter what type of power-threatening hazard you mght experience..

5. The solar power harvested depends upon the intensity of the sun – hence, the results would vary on how much solar energy the cell receives depending upon the location and on how long the exposure to sun in possible. This is one of the interesting facts about solar energy that has been underplayed for a long time.

6. Solar plants can be installed in rural areas without any difficulty. They require very little maintenance – which a child of eight can attend to once he/she is shown what to do (it is so simple). There is no noise and no hazardous by-product from using solar power.

7. The capacity of a solar plant can be increased as and when you need simply by adding more cells to it.

These are some interesting facts about solar energy that would set you thinking about the future. Applied correctly, the solar energy can free the Earth from its acute dependency on the dwindling fossil-based fuel.

Solar energy is energy that is derived from the sun. It is the mother of most renewable energies on earth, and is what drives the climate and weather and supports virtually all of the life on earth. Solar energy is free, and it needs no fuel and produces no waste or pollution. This is why it is quickly becoming one of the most widely used energy sources in the world, because it does not contribute to greenhouse gases or otherwise negatively affect the environment.

Solar Energy Systems

Solar energy systems are the systems that are set up to provide this solar energy. There are several pieces of equipment that you are going to need to create one of these systems. The most important piece of equipment is the solar panel, as this is what will be used to actually retrieve the power from the sun and allow it to be there and be converted into energy.

When you are choosing solar panels for your solar energy systems, it is important that you take a few factors into consideration. This includes cost, durability, size, and type. The cost will most often be determined by the size and durability of solar panels that you purchase, and the size should be determined by the wattage that you are looking to put out at maximum.

You also need to think about durability of solar panels for your solar energy systems. This is important and again has a lot to do with the materials that you use. The type of solar module that you choose is going to be based on what you are using it for, and typically the type of module will be different than the type that is best suited for portable uses such as boating or camping.

Benefits

There are many benefits that you will receive as a result of building your own solar energy systems. The financial rewards are often the greatest, as although the startup costs can often be quite high, it usually only takes a week or two for you to make that money back and then from there on in you are profiting. Besides the equipment and materials that you require to make the actual system, you will never have to pay for energy again.

Not only that, but you are also doing good for the environment because you are not using energy sources that are dangerous and harmful to the environment, which is especially important when you consider serious issues such as global warming.

The big question that is everyone is trying to answer is how is solar energy easily renewed though in these times of wasteful energy consumption, all that we need to worry about is when other forms of energy will leave us without adequate energy because there is no reason to worry about solar energy because it is certainly in abundance – certainly, more than any other source of energy known to us. Also, solar energy is the one renewable source of energy that unlike all other sources of energy does not cause pollution in the atmosphere because it does not emit gases that can harm the earth and nor are any chemicals released either.

Provides Us A Means To Live On This Planet

Still, there are very many people that are not aware of how is solar energy easily renewed though almost everyone is aware that solar energy does not cost us anything and that it is virtually inexhaustible. In fact, solar energy is very vast and more importantly, very clean and it is doing the human race a lot of good and is certainly a much better option as compared to burning fossil fuels that are the conventional sources of energy that we use almost indiscriminately. If it were not for solar energy, there would not be any life on the planet and the sun gives life to plants while water will evaporate as a result of the heat from the sun and thus keep us from burning to death.

Thus, there is no arguing with the fact that solar energy is renewable and will continue to be so till such time as the sun burns brightly in the skies. Thus, to provide a suitable answer to the poser as to how is solar energy easily renewed, we only need to look to the heavens and pray that the sun continues to burn brightly and thus constantly replenishes as well as renews our solar energy.

And, given that the sun will continue to burn for many billions of years, the simple answer to the question regarding how is solar energy easily renewed is that there is no need to renew this energy source since in the foreseeable future at least, there is no reason to worry about the sun dying out on us. The good news is that there is no reason to worry about how is solar energy easily renewed because with the amount of energy that the sun sends down to earth and the amount of energy that we use up for various purposes, there is so much energy available from the sun that we can consume whatever solar energy we need without needing to bother about how is solar energy easily renewed.

Solar energy is a hot topic nowadays. Chances are good that you would be interested in finding solar energy science projects. Doing solar energy science projects can show that solar energy is worth using, and it can also teach others about solar energy. Therefore, when you are looking for solar energy science projects you should keep in mind that you want to be able to show as many people as much as you can about solar energy science projects as you are doing them.

Several Projects

There are several types of solar energy science projects that you can do. First of all, you want to show that the energy from the sun can actually accomplish things. The best way to do this is to think of something small that you can do. Heat is the best way to show what is happening. Therefore, the best of the solar energy science projects are going to be ones that show it through heat.

The easiest thing to do when you are doing solar energy science projects is to figure out a way to heat something up. You can use a light bulb to simulate the sun. If you mount the light bulb close to your solar energy science projects surface, it will be easier to see. What you can do then is have a flat panel that is made up of a material that will gather the heat. Some metals, and anything that is the color black will do this. If you position this as if it is a roof, and have it over a beaker of water, you can show that the temperature in the water is higher when it is underneath the roof with the sun beating down on it.

The best way to do these solar energy science projects is to make sure that you have a control group where you can show what will happen without the solar energy science projects. For instance, if you are doing the water experiment, you would want to have another beaker of water with a thermometer in it, that is not under the light. You can then show that the one with the light is warmer than it would otherwise be. Remember that all of your solar energy science projects should include information about solar energy so that anyone looking at the project will be able to learn a little bit about solar energy as well as about your own experiment.

How does solar energy work? You’ve probably noticed solar energy panels everywhere these days. You can see them on the rooftops of small houses, large houses, apartment buildings and office buildings. Buildings in remote locations are powered exclusively by solar energy, so they have a large solar panel system. You might have seen solar-powered highway signs, out in the middle of nowhere; just a solar panel on top of a traffic light. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it: how does solar energy actually work?

How Does Solar Thermal Energy Work?

Solar thermal energy transfers heat directly from the sun to heat air or water for residential or commercial use. Large, flat panels that collect solar heat are installed in positions located so as to maximize the absorption of the sun’s rays. Water-filled tubes below the surface of the panels act as solar thermal collectors, storing the heat in the water. The hot water is stored in holding tanks and is used just as residents use water from a hot water tank.

Some homes also use a radiant heating system where the interior of the home is heated by a system of hot water-filled tubes installed under the floor. Radiant heat is especially popular in homes with ceramic tile or stone floors, because the radiant heat warms the floor on cold days.

How Does Photovoltaic Solar Energy Work?

In contrast to solar thermal energy, photovoltaic solar energy actually converts solar power in electrical power. Photovoltaic systems also use collector panels that are usually placed on rooftops. Panels can be moved and connected to form an elaborate network of solar cells.

The panels are usually made of silicon or silicon-based materials that maximize the absorption of sunlight. Because photovoltaic collectors convert the light of the sun, not the heat of the sun, into electricity, the panels keep collecting energy all the way through winter, as long as the sun keeps shining.

Absorption of sunlight generates electricity in the solar panels, and the electricity travels to a transformer, where it is converted to AC, or alternating current, power of 120 volts, which is the common electrical current used for residential purposes.

Homeowners aren’t always at home using AC power, so the power generated by photovoltaic solar energy is usually stored in a series of batteries. A solar-powered house is a battery-powered house, because lamps, appliances and other electronics that are plugged into the electrical outlets in the house are powered by the batteries, which in turn are powered by the solar panels, which are powered by the sun.

How does solar energy work? It’s not such a mystery now, is it? Now that you know, why not give it a try at your home.

A solar energy kit for the home is a very large investment, designed to pay itself off over a decade of use or more. While ultimately cheaper that electricity from the power grid, supplying enough solar energy to power your home can easily cost 10% of the total cost of your home. Because it’s such a large purchase, any consumer considering purchasing solar energy systems for their home should first ask for solar energy quotes to get the best deal possible.

Long-Term Investment

Think of a solar energy system as an investment, not a purchase. While it’s a large purchase up front, you won’t have to use as much (or any) electricity from the power grid, and with rising energy costs, the cost of solar energy will always remain free. If the average home uses $200 a month depending on their utility company and their appliances, lighting, etc., a $20,000 complete solar energy system will pay itself off in 100 months or a little more than 8 years. That’s assuming that energy costs stay at where they are. As they continue to grow, the amount of time that it will take for solar system to pay itself off will decrease to 5-6 years from time of installation as a safe estimate. Because solar systems are a new technology, their price continues to fall like other types of electronics (televisions, computers, etc.). As such, any solar energy quote is expected to be applicable only for a few months before the price decreases some more.

There are many prominent companies offering these systems now, so you can get many different solar energy quotes. It’s recommended that you develop a complete list of your energy needs so that experts are easily able to determine the perfect system for you. That way, any solar energy quotes you receive don’t ask you to pay too much, nor do they appear a good bargain only for you to realize later that they are not supplying enough energy to fulfill your needs.

Solar energy quotes are vital to purchasing the proper solar energy system for your home. They help to ensure that enough power is supplied while leaving room for growth without overcharging you. Also, because the cost of these systems are always falling, they can give you a good idea of where prices should be in several years by comparing quotes from today and a few years ago, if you are planning on building or buying a house in the future. Solar energy is going to play a prominent role in worldwide energy in the years to go, and you can get a head start with a solar energy quote.

Today, a great many number of Americans are finding it possible to live off the grid because of the surge in production of small sized wind turbines as well as the advent of photovoltaic modules. As the price of energy continues to rise and because of more awareness of our environment, people are looking to solar wind energy to meet their energy demands in order to not have to depend on the power supplied over the grid.

Wind Turbines

Even though the sun is not always going to shine and there may also be many windless days, the use of Micro as well as Mini wind turbines can help solve these minor problems and allow the average American to utilize solar wind energy effectively as well as cheaply. The fact of the matter is that wind energy certainly does a lot to improve off-grid system performance and in fact about eighty-five percent of all off-grid systems use solar wind energy.

The new micro as well as mini wind turbines uses both solar wind energy and besides allowing you to live off-the-grid these turbines are also very reliable and they are obviously more cost beneficial to the user as well. In case you are living in rural areas, you would definitely need to think about not having to depend on utility companies and would welcome using solar wind energy.

All it takes is a small number of photovoltaic panels or a wind turbine and as a matter of fact, photovoltaic cells are an excellent choice for urban living while wind turbines can be most effective when used in rural areas. What’s more, even if you are living where the sun is always shining, wind energy can still provide an excellent solution.

To be clear, solar wind energy is capable of providing all of your energy requirements and it lessens the need to buy costly storage equipment, because it is possible to alternate between solar wind energy with photovoltaic systems being used during the day while at night you can tap into energy obtained from the wind.

Not only is solar wind energy a cheaper means of obtaining energy but it is also more efficient as witnessed by the very low loss of energy which would normally occur when batteries have to be loaded and there is also no loss on account of having to convert DC power from the batteries to AC needed to run home appliances.

Solar energy wind power is natural power that has, over may centuries been harvested in a number of ways though modern technology has made it possible to do a number of things with it including heating, and lighting as well as generating electricity.

All in all, living off solar wind energy has a number of advantages and thus, is worth considering for meeting the energy needs of your home.

Heating and cooling accounts for much of the electricity used across the world today. If you were capable of cutting your electricity bill by a third or even more, wouldn’t you jump at the chance to save yourself one hundred dollars or more a month? You might actually be surprised that solar heating energy can not only heat your home but also cool it as well. That certainly might seem like a paradox to be able to use heat to cool something, but wind is actually caused by solar energy heating up some air and causing it to rise. You can use this same technique to cause a breeze through your own home, as well as supplying all of your other heating needs that you have throughout the year.

More Than Electricity

Solar heating energy is just another use for solar energy systems beyond simply generating electricity. When you think about solar panels, you likely think about electricity, and while this is the most common use for them, you can also purchase solar heating energy panels for your home to directly use the sun’s energy instead of turning it into electricity. In fact, if you’re thinking about solar energy for your home, consider solar heating energy for all of your heating needs instead of turning solar energy into electricity. It will be ultimately more efficient to do so, and you’ll save some more money.

This technology relies on passive solar energy to store solar heat for further use. When you need to use it, the storage equipment will release it a little bit at a time, and it can be used to directly heat the house that way. If you wish to cool your home, the solar heating energy will create a slight breeze through your home. When combined with a dehumidifier, this system can effectively replace air conditioning in your home. Of course, solar heating energy can also be used for your water heater needs, so you literally won’t ever to spend a single cent on heating or cool electrical consumption ever again.

Solar heating energy is even more effective when installed along with normal solar energy panels, so you can get all of your energy needs met from a single, reliable, and free source. It’s now the most cost effective method of supplying all of your energy demands, and you’ll be able to not only cool and heat your home, but you can also use computers, appliances, and lights with solar energy panels as well. Within a decade, your solar system will have paid for itself, and you can save one hundred thousand dollars or more over your lifetime.

When it comes to saving money, there are many ways that can come to mind. But one of the ways to help cut down on not only the cost of your utility bill but to also help save our planet is by installing a solar energy system into your home. The home solar energy system is a great way to add electric to your home, save a few dollars, and to help preserve our planets natural resources. By bringing such a system into your home, you can end up almost completely relying on it.

The thing is though, that you will need to still have electric ran into your home in most cases as a back up system. This will also help cover times when you need to use a lot more electric then your personal solar energy system is set up to provide you with. Also, if something were to happen to where the solar energy system broke or was in need of repairs, you would not be left without electric throughout your house. It is always best to have a back up plan to fall back on.

Things To Consider

Once you are finally ready to really start thinking about actually installing a solar energy system, you need to consider a few different things. First off, you want to think about how much electric you are going to want to use so that you are installing the right size solar energy system. Some people choose to have about half of their homes electric provided by the solar energy system while others want everything to be ran off of it. If you are tight on money, you can always start with a smaller solar energy system and then increase the size of it slowly every chance you get until you are at the desired point.

You can also save money by installing the solar energy system yourself but you should have some basic construction knowledge in order to complete this type of project. If you are not really handy with tools and construction then you are going to want to hire someone to do the job for you. Ask around for different estimates so that you are getting the very best price available. Also, make sure you check around as some states will help pay for some of the costs for you to install a solar energy system because it does in turn help the environment.
